The open day was a complete success.  There was an excellent turnout and it was nice to show the funders, family and friends and other allotment societies how good our site is.

Thanks for everyone’s support and a big thank you to those who made the sandwiches, cakes and donated to the raffle which made over £30 towards the society funds.

Eagle & Child Beer Festival

12th Annual Beer Festival,

1st – 4th May 2009

Started 12 years ago by an assistant

pub manager John Mansfield, the

Beer Festival has turned into a

legendary local event.

A marquee on the Croquet Lawn

houses the beer and cider on

scaffolding along one side.

Most are gravity fed with some

of the top sellers on hand pull.

Food is available all the time in the

form of a BBQ and hog roast.

Trade continues

as usual in the pub with a more

limited menu.

In the evenings there is Live Music

(program to follow) and

Sunday is family day with

(weather permitting) with

face painting for the children,

tombola etc.

We have secured another grant to furnish the log cabin and for a portaloo.

Thanks to:

Fred, Margaret, Karl and Steve for dismantling the cabin.

Thanks to all who helped unload the wagon and thanks to Eddie, Phil, Chris, Karl, Margaret, Antonio and Steve for erecting the cabin.

Cabin

We have purchased a log cabin for meetings ect.  We urgently require flag stones to sit the base on.  Once these are in place erection can commence.  Can all members keep their eys and ears open for free flags.

              Purchased from Tiger Timber Speke.

Recycle your Christmas tree

If you have a real Christmas tree why not bring it down to the allotment for shredding into wood chips

Chicken Manure

A firm in Skelmersdale has kindly donated a tonne of Chicken Manure.  This has been divided up and each plot given two bags irrelevant of plot size.

22/9/09

Rockdust by SEER

There are many interesting facts about crushed lava rock when added to the soil in the autumn. It boosts the minerals in the soil allowing for larger crops, improved flavour, longer shelf life, increases pest resistance and more.  No need for any other fertilisers, completely organic.

A 20kg bag retails at £10 from a nursery in Preston and covers 40sq metres. However if 50 bags are ordered they can by purchased for £7.60 per 20kg bag including VAT & delivery..

A one Tonne loose bag of rockdust is £195 incl VAT & delivery.

If anyone is interested in sharing a tonne bag let me know.

150kilo required per plot.

Cost around £30 per plot.

Let Steve know if you require any so that an order can be placed before winter

There are a few people interested up to now.

Proposed New Lease Agreement

The committee has met with the Allotments Officer for West Lancashire District Council and the outcome looks promising for Skelmersdale Horticultural Society.
The council will draw up a lease agreement and pass this through their legal section prior it being sent to SHS. The committee will then ask the NSALG to check it on our behalf prior to signing it.
The rent to the council may be reduced if the society takes full responsibility of the site but it would entail a lot of work for the committee to undertake during the coming year. The council would still have the last say in matters concerning who can apply for an allotment, grievances and buildings e.g. sheds/green houses.

27th April 09.  We have still not had word from WLDC reference the new lease agreement.

Further information will be posted on this site when available
