Q: Why have an allotment?
A: There are many reasons why people have allotements.  Some do it for exercise whilst seeing something for their effort.  Others want to have some control over what they eat reducing the exposure of pesticides, fugicides and herbicides.  There is also a great community spirit on allotments, people of all ages and backgrounds meet and pass on ideas and tips on how and what to grow.
Q: How long is the waiting list?
A: On the 12th April 2008 there were thirty one potential members on the waiting list.  By Nov 2008 this had swelled to 93 due to adding potential members from WLDC waiting list peaking in 2009 to 114.   In 2007 season five new members signed up. No new members were signed up in 2008.  However, three were signed up 2009 and seven in 2010. This has been due to some of our members have given up a half plot whilst others have quit altogether allowing for any full plots to be subdivided into two half plots.  As of 15th March 2010 there are 83 on the waiting list.  Due to the current waiting times many potential members have relocated or their personal life has changed and they no longer wish to be considered.  It has also been found that contact details have become out of date therefore not being able to be contacted reducing the list considerably. This gives some indication on the waiting time for a plot. 

Q: What is the cost of an allotment?
A: The cost can range from under a£10 to over £75 pounds per year.  Skelmersdale Horticultural Society charge £36 per full plot (10 Poles) or £18 per half plot (5 Poles) per annum plus £4 membership per person per annum and an initial £10 deposit for keys, which is returnable upon leaving the society.  This is reviewed annually and agreed at the AGM.
