Allotment History

The allotment consisting of 26 plots was formed when Skelmersdale 'New Town' was created in the 1960's as an over spill to Liverpool.  Skelmersdale Development Corporation handed the site over to West Lancashire District Council in 1980. Shortly afterwards the local authority devolved management to Ashurst Horticultural Society. In the 90's interest diminished and the allotment became overgrown and underused.  At one stage membership was as low as 12 members with an annual turnover of less than £200.

The overgrown site targeted by vandals taking advantage of the poor condition of the post and wire fence.
